The ability of stem cells to self-renew and then differentiate into specific cell subtypes has been demonstrated both in vitro [2] and, more recently, in vivo [3]. For this reason, the term 'neural progenitor cells' (NPCs) is now used to loosely define all dividing cells with some ability to generate different neural units [3]. Current data have estimated that approximately 700 new neurons are added to the adult human hippocampus daily, suggesting that adult hippocampal neurogenesis has a critical role in mediating human brain functions, such as memory formation and cognition [4,5].
