NASA could have cut costs after botched Orbital launch: watchdog

(Reuters) - NASA missed opportunities to save millions of dollars following Orbital ATK's failed cargo run to the International Space Station two years ago, the agency's top watchdog said on Thursday. The NASA Office of Inspector General also questioned Orbital's plan to resume deliveries to the space station, a permanently staffed, $100 billion research laboratory that flies about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth.  Orbital is buying rides for its next two Cygnus cargo capsules from United Launch Alliance (ULA), a partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing. Orbital's first mission using ULA's Atlas rocket is slated for December, with the second to follow in early 2016.

Ultrathin 'Invisibility Cloak' Can Match Any Background

Now, researchers have built an ultrathin "invisibility cloak" that gets around this problem, by turning objects into perfect, flat mirrors. Led by Xiang Zhang, director of materials science at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the group constructed a thin film consisting of a 50-nanometer-thick layer of magnesium fluoride topped by a varying pattern of tiny, brick-shaped gold antennas, each 30 nanometers thick. Shining a light, with a wavelength of 730 nanometers, or near-infrared, they found that it reflected back almost perfectly.

New Flu Shot Addresses Last Year's Shortcomings

This season's flu vaccine will contain the strain of influenza virus that was predominant during last year's worse-than-usual flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Last season, a particular strain of H3N2 flu virus — known as the "Switzerland variant" — circulated widely and was poorly matched to the H3N2 strain found in the vaccine, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, said at a news conference today (Sept. 17). Last year was a bad year for the flu, and the United States saw the highest hospitalization rates ever documented for people age 65 and older, Frieden said.

Confusion and Fear of Ebola Delayed Treatment for Some Kids

Nearly 100 children in the United States were suspected of having Ebola last year, and although none of them actually had the deadly disease, these kids sometimes experienced delays in care because medical staff were concerned about being exposed to Ebola, according to a new report. Although it's true that health care professionals are at increased risk for Ebola when they care for patients with the disease, there should be a way for them to provide the proper care for patients suspected of having Ebola while still being aware of the risks, the researchers said. "Public health and health care providers in the United States, while maintaining a high level of vigilance for Ebola among ill pediatric patients, should be prepared to provide child-focused care that includes timely diagnosis and treatment of common pediatric illnesses," the report said.

The photo, which New Horizons took during its epic July 14 flyby of Pluto, captures a dramatic sunset view. Towering ice mountains cast long shadows, and more than a dozen layers of the dwarf planet's wispy atmosphere are clearly visible. Now you see it, now you don't: invisibility cloak nears reality

Scientists said on Thursday they have successfully tested an ultra-thin invisibility cloak made of microscopic rectangular gold blocks that, like skin, conform to the shape of an object and can render it undetectable with visible light. The researchers said while their experiments involved cloaking a miniscule object they believe the technology could be made to conceal larger objects, with military and other possible applications.

That's the vision of the Self-deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments (SHEE) project, which is developing domiciles that could be useful both here on Earth and on alien worlds such as Mars. Supermoon Lunar Eclipse: How Science Explains the Epic Night Sky Event

This month's highly anticipated "supermoon eclipse" may be a magical treat for skywatchers, but there's nothing supernatural about the event. This Summer's Arctic Sea Ice Is 4th Lowest on Record

This year's minimum sea-ice extent in the Arctic was the fourth lowest since satellite observations began, NASA announced yesterday (Sept. 15). "This year is the fourth lowest, and yet we haven't seen any major weather event or persistent weather pattern in the Arctic this summer that helped push the extent lower as often happens," Walt Meier, a sea-ice scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a statement. Arctic sea ice has been in decline since at least the 1970s due to climate change, and recent research reveals the thinning is accelerating.

But the laserlike focus on pandas has left some gaps in protections for other animals, according to the new study. Just months after Chinese scientists caused an international furor by saying they had genetically modified human embryos, a scientist at London's Francis Crick Institute has asked the British government's fertility regulator for a license to carry out similar experiments. The researcher, a stem cell scientist called Kathy Niakan, stressed she has no intention of genetically altering embryos for use in human reproduction, but is seeking to deepen scientific understanding of how a healthy human embryo develops.

Paralyzed Man Can 'Feel' Again with Brain-Connected Prosthetic Hand

A prosthetic hand that is connected directly to the brain successfully enabled a paralyzed man to "feel" again, according to researchers at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The 28-year-old male, who suffered a spinal cord injury and has been paralyzed for more than a decade, was able to control a robotic hand with his brain and reported being able to sense physical sensations. DARPA researchers attached electrodes to the man's sensory cortex — the area of the brain responsible for identifying tactile sensations, such as pressure.

Many scientists have tried to piece together how memories work in animals, especially chimpanzees and other apes. In a new study, scientists from Kyoto University in Japan wanted to examine whether a group of chimpanzees and bonobos (a close chimp relative) could not only remember past events, but also anticipate what would happen next. There is no evidence that supports spacing out childhood vaccines — which two Republican candidates for president suggested in last night's presidential debate — instead of following the recommended schedule, experts say. "I am totally in favor of vaccines, but I want smaller doses over a longer period of time," Donald Trump, one of the candidates for president, said at the debate. Eating Healthy Foods May Lower Depression Risk

Following a diet rich in produce and low in processed meats — even if you don't do it perfectly — may be helpful in preventing depression, according to a large new study. To lower the risk of depression, "People can eat everything, but everything in moderation," as long as they try to eat lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts and fish, and avoid fast food and processed meats, said study author Almudena Sanchez-Villegas of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. At the start of the study, researchers asked 15,000 Spanish university graduates who had never had depression what they normally ate.

The 52-year-old man went swimming at a beach on the Red Sea, an inlet of the Indian Ocean that sits between Africa and Asia. Later, the man developed a swollen and droopy eyelid that didn't go away even a month later, according to the report. Dr. Wolf A. These are just two of the (real) scientific findings celebrated tonight (Sept. 17) at the Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, an annual event held here at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre. Apollo Lunar Module Lands in Smithsonian 'Milestones of Flight' Gallery

An Apollo Lunar Module, the vehicle that ferried astronauts to and from the surface of the moon, was moved into the National Air and Space Museum's "Boeing Milestones of Flight" Hall this week in preparation for its conservation, modification and display debuting with the hall's re-opening in July 2016. "The Lunar Module [LM] will act as a striking welcome to visitors as they enter the museum and [will] represent the 'milestone' of America's first moon landing in July 1969," Smithsonian officials said in a statement. The second of the lunar modules to be built, LM-2 was intended for an uncrewed test flight into Earth orbit in 1968.

If the weather is clear in your area this evening, you'll have an opportunity to see two of the most popular objects to view through a telescope: the moon and Saturn. New Listeria Outbreak Tied to Soft Cheeses

Two dozen people in nine states have been sickened with the serious foodborne illness listeriosis, likely from eating soft cheeses that were contaminated with bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All of the patients were infected with one of five rare strains of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, the CDC said. Of these, 21 people needed to be hospitalized, and one person died, the CDC said.

NASA's 1st Manned Flight of Orion Space Capsule May Slip to 2023

The first manned flight of NASA's Orion spacecraft, which is being built to help humanity explore Mars and other distant destinations, may be delayed by two years, until 2023, agency officials announced today. Orion's first crewed sojourn, known as Exploration Mission 2 (EM-2), is officially targeted for launch in August 2021. Engineers and technicians are still working toward the August 2021 goal, but hitting that target is unlikely, said NASA Associate Administrator Robert Lightfoot.

NASA's Curiosity Rover Finds Petrified Sand Dunes on Mars (Photo)

A sweeping new panorama from NASA's Curiosity rover shows petrified sand dunes stretching across the jagged terrain of Mount Sharp on Mars. Curiosity's science team says the newly imaged dunes look similar to "crossbedding," structures formed by wind-deposited sand dunes such as those in the U.S. southwest. By looking at the sand dunes' geometry and orientation, scientists can get information about the winds that created the dunes.

Saturn's moon Enceladus is an active water world with a global body of water sloshing around deep below its icy crust, scientists have confirmed. The smoking gun is the very slight wobble that Enceladus displays as it orbits Saturn. Whoa! Sun-Watching Spacecraft Finds 3,000th Comet

A spacecraft that launched in 1995 to study the sun has discovered its 3,000th comet, further bolstering its credentials as history's greatest comet hunter. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a joint effort of NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), spotted comet number 3,000 on Sunday (Sept. 13). The landmark discovery was pulled out of SOHO's database by Worachate Boonplod of Thailand, NASA officials said.

Boeing Co on Wednesday said it had rejected an unsolicited bid from Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc for United Launch Alliance, a 50-50 rocket launch venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin Corp . "The unsolicited proposal for ULA is not something we seriously entertained," Boeing spokesman Todd Blecher said. Boeing said it remained committed "to ULA and its business, and to continued leadership in all aspects of space, as evidenced by the agreement announced last week with Blue Origin," a company owned by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos that is designing the engine for a new rocket being designed by ULA.

'The Martian' Lands at NASA: Actors Meet Real-Life Counterparts in Houston

Sebastian Stan and Mackenzie Davis visited the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston, where the actors met with their characters' real-life counterparts, took a spin in a prototype rover and spoke with the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Some Apollo Moon Samples 'Crumbling to Dust'

Some of the moon soil collected by Apollo astronauts has deteriorated significantly during its four-plus decades on Earth, a new study reports. Scientists found that the median particle size in a set of 20 different Apollo soil samples held in laboratories for research use has decreased by more than half since the samples were first measured 40 years ago. "It might be accurate to state that the Apollo lunar soils are literally crumbling to dust," the scientists, led by Bonnie Cooper of Hanyang University in South Korea, wrote in the new study.

Flower Power: Giant 'Starshades' Prepped for Exoplanet Hunting

"The unique architecture of the starshade — namely, the size and separation needed — make it difficult to test cheaply," Anthony Harness, a graduate student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, told Space.com. Harness works with Tiffany Glassman and Steve Warwick, of the aerospace company Northrop Grumman, to test starshades on Earth in dry lake beds and on mountaintops. Harness presented some of the test results at the Emerging Researchers in Exoplanet Science (ERES) Symposium at Pennsylvania State University in April.

Energy Drinks Tied to Brain Injuries in Teens

Teens who drink energy drinks a lot are more likely to get head injuries than those who don't consume the highly caffeinated beverages, a new study from Canada suggests. Students were asked about their energy drink consumption, as well as whether they had experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI), meaning they had sustained a blow to the head that left them unconscious for at least 5 minutes, or resulted in an overnight hospital stay. About 22 percent of students said they had experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in their lifetimes, and 6 percent said they'd had a TBI in the last year.

Drinking a cup of coffee at night may mess up your sleep in more ways than one: Caffeine not only keeps you awake but also affects your body's internal clock, which tells you when it's time to sleep and wake up, a new study suggests. The finding shows that caffeine "affects our physiology in a way that we hadn't really considered in the past," said Kenneth P. Wright Jr., a co-author of the study and director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory at the University of Colorado. In the study, five healthy people spent a night in a laboratory, where researchers monitored their levels of melatonin, a hormone that increases at night and is an indicator of the body's internal clock, also known as circadian rhythm.
